Compound Genetics' Horchata Description

Looking to indulge in a creamy sweet treat created by one of the most celebrated cannabis breeders of our time? Look no further. Horchata is a delicious indica-dominant hybrid with slightly spiced vanilla aromas/flavors reminiscent of the drink she's named after. Plus, she offers exceptional potency and balanced effects that have helped her outlast her initial 15 minutes of fame.

Strain History of Horchata

Horchata is sold by a variety of dispensaries and seed banks and breeders. However, the original Horchata strain was created by Chris Lynch during his time at Compound Genetics. Lynch launched Compound Genetics in 2017 and brought the brand to fame with his breeding skills and official partnerships with brands like Cookies and Runtz. Based in California, Compound Genetics is a well-respected seed collective known for its vigorous breeding programs and pheno hunts.

Lynch first got introduced to cannabis as a freshman in high school, and moved to the Netherlands in 2004 to connect with Dutch cannabis and coffeeshop culture. It was during this time that Lynch met the breeder Soma (creator of Amnesia Haze and Lavender) and acquired the foundations of the knowledge he applies in his work today.

Lynch moved back to the US in 2007 and landed a job as a grower of medical cannabis in Portland, Oregon. In 2013, he was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson's disease—a diagnosis that only fuelled his passion and work ethic even more. Shortly after his diagnosis, Lynch launched Compound Genetics and landed collaborations with Berner from Cookies, which catapulted him to cannabis fame and landed him further collaborations with the rappers Wiz Khalifa and Quavo from Migos. Some of Lynch's most notable creations while collaborating with Berner and Cookies include:

• Apples and Bananas

• Pave

• Blueberry Banana

Though he has revealed little information about Horchata, it's believed that Lynch created the strain while still a founding member of Compound Genetics. In 2022, he left Compound Genetics to found Cipher Genetics.

At the time of writing this entry, Horchata is also being sold by:

• Meraki Gardens, a female-owned and family-operated cannabis company based in Oregon. Meraki Gardens is known for growing top-shelf indoor flower from a wide variety of strains.

• WyEast Farms, which is rumored to be run by another former breeder at Compound Genetics. WyEast Farms has a long list of strains, including an assortment of Horchata crosses.

Genetic Lineage of Horchata

Horchata is thought to be a slightly indica-dominant hybrid. Stemming from a cross of Jet Fuel Gelato and Mochi (also known as Mochi Gelato), Horchata combines genetics from the almighty Gelato and Diesel families of strains.

Horchata's first parent, Jet Fuel Gelato, is a bold Diesel hybrid with disputed genetic origins. Some sources claim that it is the result of crossing Aspen OG and High Country Diesel, while Compound Genetics says it's derived from crossing Jet Fuel with Gelato. Whatever its exact genetics may be, Jet Fuel Gelato is known to pack up to 20% THC and pungent diesel/fuel aromas as well as an energizing and uplifting high.

Horchata's second parent is Mochi. Also known as Mochi Gelato or Gelato #47, Mochi is a unique Gelato phenotype with a minty, floral aroma and vanilla overtones. Unlike other Gelato varieties, Mochi is known to produce a strong, sleepy stone that's loved by recreational users looking to relax, as well as medical patients looking for long-lasting relief from physical symptoms.

Physical Characteristics of Horchata

There is limited information available about the physical characteristics of Horchata. The information compiled here comes from Node Labs and CLTVTD, two cannabis tissue labs and cloning facilities.

Horchata is only available in clone form and produces plants that grow nice and bushy during the vegetative phase. Horchata plants have large, bright green leaves and strong branches with tightly spaced nodes. Then, during bloom they stretch considerably, forming large central colas that can grow way higher than the rest of their canopy.

As they mature, Horchata plants develop tightly packed buds with light blue and purple hues, dotted with rusty pistils and coated in a frosty layer of trichomes.

Properties and Effects of Horchata

Horchata is a very potent hybrid, producing 23–28% THC and an exotic terpene mix supposedly dominated by caryophyllene, limonene, and pinene. Its unique concentration of terpenes gives Horchata a strong aroma that combines creamy vanilla notes with hints of sour gas. Some connoisseurs with a more trained palate and nose may also pick up on subtle notes of earthy coffee, cinnamon, and chocolate—all notes you might find in the strain’s namesake drink!

Horchata's high THC levels and terpenes combine to produce a very strong and long-lasting, yet manageable, high. Users of Horchata say the strain induces an almost instantaneous state of relaxation, but without causing couch-lock or drowsiness. It is known to produce a subtle boost in mood that can leave users feeling energetic and motivated, but also calm.

Uses of Horchata

Recreational users reportedly adore Horchata for its extremely well-balanced effects. While it's very potent, users find that they can still steer this strain's high in the direction they want—either to relax or to focus on a specific task. Some ways in which people use Horchata recreationally include:

• To relax at home after a long day

• While working through household chores

• To spark creativity or focus on specific tasks

• At small social gatherings with close friends

• While enjoying the great outdoors

Medical users seem just as enthusiastic about Horchata and its unique effects. While every patient is different, individuals with all manner of symptoms report using Horchata, such as the following:

• Anxiety and depression

• PTSD

• Physical pain and inflammation

• Sleep issues

• Mood disorders

Like all high-THC strains, Horchata can produce side effects, especially in high doses or in people with a low tolerance. Some negative effects of Horchata reported by users include:

• Headaches

• Dry mouth and dry eyes

• Sedation (in high doses)

Cultivation and Production of Horchata

As mentioned, Horchata is a clone-only strain available from cannabis tissue labs and cloning facilities like Node Labs and CLTVTD. Thanks to the strain's indica dominance, Horchata seems to stay nice and compact during its vegetative phase, though it is known to stretch considerably once in bloom. Indoor growers are encouraged to use training to help control this strain's height.

Horchata is said to be a vigorous grower and fairly resilient to pests and stress, making it an attractive option for outdoor growers. It is rumored to need roughly 8.5–9.5 weeks in bloom to reach maturity, and produces moderate yields of high-quality buds.
