History of the Divorce Cake Strain



Divorce Cake belongs to the vast genetic library developed by Jungle Boys, a Los Angeles-based collective of breeders dedicated to developing unique and potent cultivars. Founded in 2006 by breeders Ivan and Juice, the seed bank had humble beginnings on the West Coast. But the duo soon purchased the Toluca Lake Collective medical cannabis dispensary and went on to open stores in Orange County and San Diego. By selecting two of the most well-known and most-smoked parent strains, they gave rise to an instant hit that currently occupies the shelves of countless dispensaries.



Genetic Lineage of Divorce Cake



Like all strains, Divorce Cake started out as nothing more than an idea. The breeders over at Jungle Boys wanted to create an indica-dominant hybrid packed with THC that combined both classic and modern attributes. To make this idea a reality, they recruited White Widow and Wedding Cake.



You’ll struggle to come across a cannabis user who hasn’t heard of White Widow. This legend of the cannabis world emerged in the Netherlands in the 1990s when breeders at Green House Seeds crossed a Brazilian sativa landrace with a South Indian indica. This pairing created a hybrid with 60% sativa genetics and 40% indica. Her THC content of 15% doesn’t seem like much by modern standards, but it made White Widow a force to be reckoned with in her era. However, White Widow’s flavors and aromas also assisted in her ascent; her earthy, peppery, and piney notes not only captivate users, but they directly contribute to her energizing and creative high.



Divorce Cake’s other parent, Wedding Cake, goes by several different sobriquets, including Triangle Mints #23 and Pink Cookies. This indica-dominant hybrid shares some similarities with White Widow, but differs in some important ways. First of all, she was released in the contemporary era. Breeders at Seed Junky Genetics created this variety by crossing Cherry Pie with Girl Scout Cookies—a cross between Durban Poison and OG Kush. This modern hybrid contains an average THC content of 25%, making her much more potent than the old-school classics. An abundance of terpenes such as limonene, terpinolene, and humulene converge to provide tastes of fruity sweetness while steering the high in a stoning and relaxing direction.



Breeders over at Jungle Boys made an initial cross using these two parent strains, then carried out the necessary steps to stabilize the progeny into a consistent phenotype—Divorce Cake was born.

As an indica-dominant hybrid, Divorce Cake features a mixed morphology that leans towards the indica side of the spectrum. Plants are relatively compact and top out at a height of 150cm. However, the application of training techniques during the early vegetative phase will keep plants closer to 100cm. Overall, Divorce Cake possesses a typical indica growth pattern; plants are bushy with a dense canopy, and their leaves feature broad leaflets. Divorce Cake features a thick and sturdy stem along with internodes that are longer than those found in pure indica varieties.
