Permanent Marker is a powerful hybrid strain with deep roots in California and a strong following all over North America. It boasts a minty, peppery, gassy aroma with hints of cookies. It also has massive THC levels that produce a strong burst of cerebral euphoria, followed by a long, trippy psychedelic daze. Strain History of Permanent Marker



Permanent Marker is a hybrid strain bred by Doja Exclusives, a Californian cannabis collective based in Sacramento. Like other Cali cannabis brands, Doja Exclusives not only sells cannabis genetics but also streetwear and merchandise to support its brand image.



Doja Exclusives is also renowned as one of the few remaining "independent" cannabis brands in California, meaning the company isn't sponsored by any larger corporations. Instead, Doja is run by its founder Ryan Bartholomew and a close team of representatives.



In contrast to other Cali cannabis entrepreneurs, Ryan Bartholomew doesn't try to hide the fact that he's not a grower. Instead, he is very open about the hard work he puts into sourcing his strains from other cultivators. Permanent Marker was apparently bred and grown by Seed Junky Genetics' JBeezy. The strain was launched in June 2022 on both the East and West coast.



Genetic Lineage of Permanent Marker



Permanent Marker is a 3-way cross between Biscotti S1, Sherb BX, and a 3rd-generation cut of Jealousy. Below, we'll explore each of these strains in a little more detail and see how their genetics influence Permanent Marker.



Biscotti is a descendant of the beloved Gelato line. More specifically, it's a cross between Gelato #25 (a rare Gelato pheno said to produce a heavy-hitting stone and sweet floral aromas) and Sour Florida OG (an indica-dominant hybrid combining Chemdawg, Lemon Thai, and Hindu Kush genetics). Biscotti is known for producing a tingly body high and a creative cerebral buzz, as well as its unique aroma that combines sweet cookie notes with dank diesel overtones.



Sherb BX, on the other hand, is a unique backcross (i.e. a cross between a hybrid and one of its parent strains) of Sherb (also known as Super Sherb). Bred by Arizona Nectars Farms, Sherb is a cross of Garlic Mushroom Cookies and Sunset Sherbet and boasts musky pine aromas, 20% THC, and an uplifting cerebral high.



Finally, the last strain used to create Permanent Marker is Jealousy. The result of a Gelato and Sherbet backcross, Jealousy is one of the flagship strains produced by Seed Junky Genetics. Jealousy is known for its creamy candy aroma and producing a relaxing, giggly, and happy high. To create Permanent Marker, JBeezy apparently used a unique 3rd-generation Jealousy plant for its particular growing traits, aromas, and potency.



Physical Characteristics of Permanent Marker



Neither Doja nor Seed Junky have shared any information about the physical traits of Permanent Marker. Some growers, however, have secured the strain in seed form from Premium Cultivars and shared pictures/notes of what the strain grows like.



Permanent Marker by Premium Cultivars seems to be a 70% indica-dominant hybrid. The seeds grow into short, stocky plants with very broad leaves and a typical Christmas tree structure. Permanent Marker by Premium Cultivars grows vigorously and produces a lot of foliage during its vegetative phase.



The plants seem to hold a vibrant, lime-green colour. In the first 2–3 weeks of bloom, the plants stretch somewhat as they prepare to bear the load of their buds. As they bloom, Permanent Marker plants develop deep green foliage and start producing dense flowers with lots of milky pistils and resin.



Come harvest time, Permanent Marker plants are typically heavy with small but dense indica flowers. The buds tend to preserve a beautiful deep-green colour spotted with dark orange pistils. They have a tight structure made up of close clusters of swollen calyxes coated in a frosty layer of trichomes.



Properties/Effects of Permanent Marker



Permanent Marker by Doja Exclusives is an extremely potent strain. Doja says the strain regularly produces around 30% THC, though user reports show that some batches test as high as 35%.



The dense, crystalline resin coating these thick flowers also contains extremely high terpene concentrations. Its most dominant terpenes are caryophyllene, limonene, and myrcene, which combine to give the strain a minty, slightly peppery nose, cookie and gas undertones, as well as hints of sweet berries and candy. Some users describe the aroma as being floral, soapy, and sweet all at once.



With such high amounts of THC and terpenes, it's no surprise that Permanent Marker delivers a very intense high. Users report feeling an instant rush of cerebral euphoria that kicks the mind into overdrive just minutes after their first toke. Once this initial burst of mental energy subsides, you can expect to drift back to reality in a clear-headed, psychedelic, and positive daze and with a numb, completely relaxed body.



Some users report using Permanent Marker during the day, but because of its extreme potency, it's probably best enjoyed in the evenings or whenever you have nothing important on your schedule.

Permanent Marker currently isn't available from Doja Exclusives or Seed Junky Genetics. However, the strain is available in seed form from Premium Cultivars.



Grow reports of Permanent Marker by Premium Cultivars show that it is a bushy, vigorous plant that can be grown both indoors and out. These plants produce a lot of vibrant, thick foliage which invites some growers to employ LST, lollipopping, and defoliation in order to maximize light penetration through their canopy. Proper ventilation and tight humidity control are also very important when growing this strain, as Permanent Marker's dense foliage can create a breeding ground for pests and pathogens in warm, humid conditions.



Thanks to its indica-dominance, Permanent Marker by Premium Cultivars is fast-flowering and can be harvest-ready after 8–9 weeks of bloom. Premium Cultivars reports that Permanent Marker can produce up to 280g/m² indoors, and up to 340g per plant outside.



Permanent Marker: A Beloved Cali Hybrid



Permanent Marker is a unique hybrid strain bred by Seed Junky Genetics and commercialized by Doja Exclusives. Boasting a minty aroma with hints of pepper, gas, and cookies, as well as sky-high THC levels, it's no wonder why this strain has become so popular. While clones of the original Permanent Marker aren't currently available, some seedbanks do offer the strain in seed form for home growers.
