Compound Genetics' Gastro Pop Description

Gastro Pop is a hybrid cannabis strain bred by one of the US' most iconic breeders. It boasts a combination of strong genetics, dank aromas, and plenty of THC, and delivers an intense, long-lasting body buzz alongside cerebral euphoria. Keep reading to learn all there is to know about the Gastro Pop strain.

Strain History of Gastro Pop

Gastro Pop is a hybrid creation from Chris Lynch at Compound Genetics. Compound Genetics is among the biggest names in American cannabis, and Lynch is renowned for his role as head breeder and founder of the brand. While he moved on from Compound Genetics in 2022, Lynch is associated with many of the brand's biggest strains, including:

• Apples & Bananas

• Blue Lobster

• Pave

• Khalifa Mints

• Horchata

Lynch started developing a love for cannabis in high school and moved to Amsterdam in 2004 to immerse himself in the Dutch cannabis scene. During his time in the Netherlands, Lynch also met renowned breeders like Soma and plunged deeper into the unique world of Dutch coffeeshops and weed. In 2007, Lynch moved to Portland, OR and began working as a medical cannabis grower, finally getting a chance to put his knowledge to practical use.

Around 2013, Lynch was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease—a diagnosis that only further ignited his passion for cannabis and breeding. In the following years, Lynch would found Compound Genetics and collaborate with some of the cannabis world's biggest personalities, including Berner and Wiz Khalifa, among others.

There's a variety of Gastro Pop phenotypes out there, each with unique traits. Arguably the most popular is Gastro Pop #5, though Gastro Pop S1 (an inbred version of the strain) is also popular since it is the only version available in feminized seed form.

Genetic Lineage of Gastro Pop

Gastro Pop was created from a cross of Apples & Bananas and Grape Gas—two strains also created by Chris Lynch. Below we'll shine a light on both parent strains.

Apples & Bananas, Gastro Pop's first parent, is a beloved strain in its own right. Combining genetics from Now N Later and Jet Fuel Gelato, Apples & Bananas boasts deliciously fruity aromas with bold notes of, you guessed, apples and bananas, as well as hints of cherries and strong gassy overtones. Its flavor is also dominated by notes of apples and bananas, tied together with full-bodied and slightly earthy cookie/pastry notes. Apples & Bananas flowers are a little airy and spear-shaped, with stunning purple colors, and deliver a heavy head high with a light, relaxing body buzz.

Gastro Pop's second parent, Grape Gas, is a heavy-handed indica-dominant strain that combines Grape Pie and Jet Fuel Gelato genetics. As its name suggests, Grape Gas has a dank aroma that couples sweet grape notes with pungent diesel overtones. Its flavor is similar, mixing grape with bold berry sweetness and a strong, sour note reminiscent of dank diesel. Grape Gas flowers have a very dense structure with a vibrant mix of bright green, deep purple, and fiery orange hues, all under a frosty layer of trichomes. Its effects are deeply relaxing, mixing a warm body buzz with an uplifting cerebral high.

Physical Characteristics of Gastro Pop

Gastro Pop #5 is hard to source, as it's a clone-only cut. Gastro Pop S1, however, was specially created by Compound Genetics to give growers the opportunity to grow this strain from seed. Nonetheless, the rarity of this strain means that there is very little information available regarding its physical appearance.

According to reports from home growers and seed banks, Gastro Pop is a very vigorous hybrid. It produces medium-sized plants with large internodal spacing and broad, bright green leaves. Once in bloom, Gastro Pop is known to stretch a lot and gradually take on darker colors. Come harvest time, Gastro Pop plants typically have dark fan leaves with beautiful shades of yellow, orange, and dark purple. Its buds, on the other hand, tend to retain some of their vibrant light green shades with stunning purple highlights, bright orange pistils, and a crystalline coating of resin.

Properties and Effects of Gastro Pop

Gastro Pop is a very potent cannabis strain, producing between 23–30% THC. According to Compound Genetics, original Gastro Pop #5 clones test between 27–30% THC, while Gastro Pop S1 produces between 23–27%. Besides its high THC levels, Gastro Pop also produces a rich mix of terpenes including myrcene, caryophyllene, and limonene, which combine to give the strain a skunky, gassy aroma of grapes, apples, and bananas with sweet, candied berry overtones. Gastro Pop's flavor is similar, with upfront notes of petrol, fruit, and a lingering skunkiness. Note that, according to Compound Genetics, Gastro Pop S1 seeds may produce phenos with unique terps that are spicy, sweet, and even savory.

With such high concentrations of THC and terpenes, it is no surprise that Gastro Pop produces very strong effects. After just one or two hits, Gastro Pop's effects can be felt both in the head and body, combining to produce a happy and relaxed stone. Users with a tolerance might find Gastro Pop's effects balanced enough to stay productive and do housework, pick away at basic taskwork, or even focus on creative projects. Users also report feeling hungry and aroused while under Gastro Pop's spell. Users with less of a tolerance, on the other hand, should get ready to get pleasantly lost in Gastro Pop's intoxicating euphoria as they giggle, eat, and chill out.

Uses of Gastro Pop

Gastro Pop is very popular among recreational users thanks to its hard-hitting, long-lasting high. While everyone is different, recreational smokers who have tried Gastro Pop report using the strain:

• While playing video games

• Before dinner or dessert

• To relax after work or after a workout

• Before cleaning the house or gardening

• While working on creative tasks/projects

Medical marijuana patients also report using Gastro Pop in a variety of ways. The strain hasn't been specifically studied in laboratory or clinical settings for its medical benefits, but MMJ patients with the following conditions may consider opting for this strain:

• Pain

• Depression

• Stress

• Anxiety

• Appetite loss

• Poor mood

• Sleep issues

With up to 30% THC, Gastro Pop is very potent and can cause negative side effects in some people. These may include:

• Dry mouth/eyes

• Dizziness

• Paranoia

Cultivation and Production of Gastro Pop

Gastro Pop #5 and other phenotypes are clone-only varieties that are extremely hard to source. Gastro Pop S1, on the other hand, is available in seed form from some retailers.

Growers report that Gastro Pop seeds have a good germination rate and quickly grow into strong, vigorous plants. Thanks to their long internodal spacing and strong stems and branches, Gastro Pop plants lend themselves extremely well to training techniques such as LST, topping, and super cropping, as well as ScrOG setups. Gastro Pop is reportedly also very versatile, growing well indoors and outdoors, as well as in soil and hydro setups—just remember that these plants apparently stretch a lot as they enter bloom, which may make them tricky to grow in small spaces.

According to Compound Genetics, Gastro Pop plants need roughly 8–9 weeks of flowering to reach maturity. During this time, it's important to keep a close eye on the temperatures and RH in your garden/room, as Gastro Pop's dense flowers and canopy can trap moisture and heat, creating a breeding ground for bacteria and mould.

Gastro Pop — A Dank Hybrid From Chris Lynch and Compound Genetics

Gastro Pop by Compound Genetics is a well-balanced hybrid available in clone and seed form. With dank aromas combining notes of gas, fruit, and candy, as well as a potent high that targets both the head and body, it's no wonder this strain is popular among both recreational and medical cannabis users.
